Milan Design Week offers a glimpse into the ideas shaping the future of design. The Milan Edit brings together the collections, conversations and moments that stayed with the Fanuli team long after the fair ended. For our first edition, Joseph Fanuli shares four observations from Milan, designs that challenged convention, celebrated materiality and revealed how thoughtful design continues to evolve.

ISSUE ONE | With Joseph Fanuli

Every year, Milan reminds me why I love returning. There’s an energy that transforms the city. Showrooms open their doors, cafés fill with designers, architects and creatives from around the world, and every conversation offers a new perspective. Being among the first to experience the collections our suppliers have invested time developing is always inspiring. But it’s not just the products that stay with me. It’s hearing the thinking behind them, seeing how ideas have evolved, and experiencing them in the city they were created in.

02 | MATERIALS THAT MATTER
Clarence Collection | Flexform
“Flexform has always had an incredible ability to combine materials with restraint. Clarence really stood out because every detail feels intentional. The combination of timber, leather and soft curved forms feels thoroughly contemporary, yet there’s a timelessness to it that tells you it will still be relevant years from now.”

03 | THE POWER OF PLACE
Margherì Outdoor Collection | Flexform
“One of the moments that stayed with me was seeing Flexform’s outdoor collection within the gardens of the Chiostro Sant’Angelo. Experiencing the furniture in natural light, surrounded by beautiful architecture and landscape rather than the fluorescent lighting of an exhibition hall, completely changed the way the outoor collection was understood. It reinforced that Flexform isn’t simply furniture, it’s a lifestyle designed to become part of the environment and the way people choose to live.”

01 | THE SOFA THAT REVEALED MORE
Quincy Sofa | Flexform
“What really struck me about Quincy was how it reveals itself. From a distance it has a strong architectural presence, but the closer you move, the soft curves and finer detailing begin to emerge. Then you sit down and realise just how comfortable it is.”

04 | DESIGN THAT ADAPTS
Areo Chair | Kristalia
“What stood out to me about Areo was its ability to adapt. It’s a chair with a very honest, industrial character, yet it feels incredibly considered. The option to include upholstery means it can evolve as spaces and needs change. It’s a thoughtful approach to design that balances durability, flexibility and everyday practicality.”
